Abstract

The objective of the research was to identify data production and demand of the honey bee, in Costa Rica, in order to analyze its behavior between 1984 and 2014. The data used are available in the official statistics of the United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO-FAOSTAT). The main conclusion was that the activity of honey bee presented a relatively stable behavior with respect to production and productivity, between 1984 and 2014, with a relative stagnation in the annual levels of production, which affects the income of small farmers engaged in such activity. Apparent domestic consumption had a smaller decrease with respect to production, between 2001 and 2014, due to the increase in imports of bee honey in Costa Rica.
