Abstract

In the agri-food sector, there is currently talk of agriculture 4.0 and 5.0, which consists of including and integrating the latest developments based on digital technologies. However, in order to adopt them, technological capabilities and prior infrastructure are required. In that sense, the aim of this research was to identify the potential of the Mexican agri-food sector for the adoption of digital technologies in the agri-food sector. The potential for adopting new technologies is linked to the characteristics of the production units in the agri-food sector. For the above, the documentary research method was used and the information on the variables analyzed was obtained from the Encuesta Nacional Agropecuaria 2019. In terms of results, it stands out that computer and communication technologies have a national average of use of 37.69 %, the use of computers presents a national average of 5.57 %, the use of internet 7.88 %, the use of cell phone 88.13 %, stands out as the most widespread and used technology in the sector. The educational level is very low and there is still a large part of the population that does not have any kind of education. Regarding the availability of credit, it is important to highlight that the requests are very low and that most of the credit requests made are approved, which suggests that there is good availability. The above results suggest that the Mexican agri-food sector has low potential for the adoption of new technologies. In this sense, it is important to generate more information and knowledge on the subject, to generate policies in accordance with the new realities of the sector that is in constant change and transformation.
