Guayabo National Monument: Pre- Columbian Aqueduct Water Quality

Abstract

The present study main goal is to analyze the physicochemical and microbiological water parameters throughout the different stages of the pre-columbian aqueduct, and therefore, compare the results with those of the water supply systems operated by the local ASADA. The methodology consisted of identifying the aqueduct stages, water sampling at six different points within the aqueduct, and analysing the laboratory tests including field parameters, anions, cations, heavy metals and pesticides. It is unknown whether the pre-columbian aqueduct supplied water to ancient natives with the same quality as today; however, there is a great chance the physicochemical characteristics remain alike. The results indicate the pre-columbian aqueduct carries good water quality, and the detected high concentrations of iron and aluminum are most likely due to decline in infrastructure and inappropriate source collection. According to the analysis, the water comes from the same aquifer in both the pre-columbian aqueduct and the local water supply systems, and it is considered potable. Finally, no anthropogenic pollution within the pre-columbian aqueduct water was found, and the aqueduct still works properly preventing entry of pollutants into the system. The study highlights the importance of preserving the pre-columbian aqueduct of the Guayabo National Monument by the costa rican government.
