Abstract

One of the main problems of machining can be described as the achievement of a predefined product quality with given working conditions. The turning operation on Sistemas Integrados de Manufactura (SIMTEC) Laboratory has been stu-died with diffe-rent cutting conditions (feed, depth of cut, rpm) and material type (Aluminum 6061, Steel 1020) to identify the combination and level factors that improve the surface roughness in a work piece. Using three of Design of Experiments techniques (DOE), such as factorial design, multiple linear regression and response surface methodo-logy (RSM) we identified the factors and levels that reduce the surface roughness and these are the feed rate = 50 mm/min, rpm = 1200 and aluminum material. A first-order model has been established between the cutting parameters and surface roughness which can be used together with the RMS graph to predict an average roughness value.
