Abstract

Cultural heritage faces the challenge of attaining recognition and social transmission. In Costa Rica, the safeguarding of national heritage is limited and threatened by the loss of roots caused by globalization, which is changing traditional social and urban dynamics. This article generates a reflection on the use of geographic information system (GIS) and web mapping tools as instruments for the universalization and dissemination of a registry of heritage resources identified in the city of Limón, as a result of the extension project: “Taking advantage of opportunities for the generation of endogenous development through the enhancement of heritage resources in the historic center and first expansion area of the city of Limón.” Methodologically, after compiling the heritage resource registry, we explored various web mapping tools to create an open-access tool that supports the presentation of geospatial data without requiring the download of additional applications. This tool was designed to be compatible with any web browser, thereby enhancing accessibility and convenience. Consequently, a configuration of two web mapping tools was implemented. The first is a repository that outlines the tangible and intangible heritage resources, and a set of strategic actions defined by the extension project for the generation of endogenous development taking advantage of heritage resources. The second is a dynamic tool that enables the classification of tangible and intangible heritage resources according to cultural domains and the state of their conservation. Additionally, it facilitates multi-criteria valuation of these heritage resources, a process undertaken by the extension project.
