Fuel load of the Typha domingensis in the Palo Verde National Park
Main Article Content
Abstract
Typha domingensis, a native plant in Costa Rica, has managed to proliferate intensively in some of the lagoons of the Palo Verde National Park (PVNP). However, due to its difficult control, it continues to be one of the species with the highest incidence of forest fires.
The properties of Typha in PVNP were analyzed in two ways: as measurements of plant characteristics in the field and as physicochemical measurements in the laboratory.
Field measurements showed a difference between physical characteristics, distribution and weight according to the study area, with the Nicaragua and Espuelas sites showing the greatest difference.
With respect to the drying curves, it is possible to consider that the different parts of the plant do not present a significant difference with respect to the possibility of retaining humidity.
Regarding to the flame advance, Typha does not show a significant advance when the flame is eliminated, but it was possible to identify that the root is capable of maintaining the ember. Finally, it was found that the plant has a higher calorific value in its spike related to the composition of its seed, while it has a low average fuel load of 156 MJ m-2.
Therefore, it can be considered that the characteristics of Typha are influenced by the site evaluated, with respect to its growth and number of plants per m2, which conditions the estimated fire load density at each site, but without a significant variation in the park, and the average value indicated can be taken.
