Abstract

In this paper points up the importance of biomarkers in the biomedical area for the development of technologies that allow early diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cancer. Three of the biomarkers for cancer that have been shown to be effective for its treatment are highlighted: the prostate specific antigen (PSA), which is of utmost importance when determining recurrences of prostate cancer and evaluating the response to treatment, micro RNA (miRNA), which is altered in cancer cells, and the hormone β-HCG. The latter can be used as a tumor marker for various types of cancer and it has been determined that this hormone can act as an inhibitor of apoptosis and stimulate the growth of cellular cancers. Furthermore, there is a direct relationship between the concentration of β-HCG and the aggressiveness of the cancer.
