Abstract

Cannabidiol is one of the most abundant compounds of Cannabis sativa, and it’s extremely important due to its high medical potential, especially in reference to neurodegenerative illnesses. Through physiological intervention carried out by the endocannabinoid system and its antioxidant properties, it's able to prevent phenomena such as neuronal apoptosis, and its able to assist with the management of the most prevalent symptoms, namely inflammation, pain and accumulation of toxic secondary compounds, of illnesses such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and Dementia. On the other hand, bioavailability, adverse effects, and personal beliefs correspond to factors that make the implementation of CBD in medications difficult. Finally, despite the fact that CBD presents ample benefits, it’s necessary to improve administration routes, the mitigation of unwanted side effects, and to change the social perception of the medical use of Cannabis sativa in order to allow the implementation of CBD as a regular treatment for neurodegenerative illnesses.
