Guideline for public places cleansing
Main Article Content
Abstract
Costa Rica makes efforts to prevent marine pollution in various ways, one of them being public space cleaning campaigns. There is no single methodology in the country for collecting and recording data that allows for comparison and identification of the progress made in improving sanitation in these spaces. This guide is the result of analyzing several methodologies used by organized groups in the country, whether they are International or National Non-governmental Organizations, as well as conversations with groups or individuals who also contribute to supporting the reduction of waste that reaches the sea, either through land activities or on the coasts.
To create this guide, an analysis of the current situation of public space cleaning was carried out, obtaining general information from databases and interviewing responsible organizations that promote these activities. It was determined that most organizations do not have or know of a methodological guide for cleaning these spaces, do not collect data, do not have a methodology for quantifying collected waste, and cannot share the data obtained in clean-ups due to the lack of a platform to do so. The implementation of this guide will improve data collection on marine pollution in Costa Rica, as well as promote active and safe participation of citizens in the protection of marine ecosystems.
